Group by geography, not by interest

The most common planning mistake is building a day around a theme — a mosque day, a palace day — and then discovering the sites are on opposite sides of the Golden Horn. Istanbul punishes this. Crossing between the historic peninsula, Beyoğlu and the Asian side costs 30 to 60 minutes each way depending on traffic.

Group by district instead. Sultanahmet is one day. Karaköy, Galata and Beyoğlu are another. Beşiktaş with the palaces and a Bosphorus stretch is a third. Kadıköy and the Asian side is a fourth. Within each of those, everything is walkable.

Two major sites a day, not five

A major site in Istanbul is not a 30-minute visit. Topkapı Palace is two hours minimum and three with the Harem. Hagia Sophia is 45 to 60 minutes if you want to look properly. Dolmabahçe is 90 minutes on a guided circuit.

Two of those in one day, plus walking, a market, lunch and a coffee, is a full and satisfying day. Three is possible and tiring. Five is a list, not a visit.

Build in the things that are not sites: the ferry crossing, an hour in a market, a long breakfast. These are what people actually remember.

  • Day 1 — Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome, Cistern.
  • Day 2 — Topkapı Palace plus the Grand and Spice Bazaars.
  • Day 3 — Karaköy, Galata, Istiklal, ending on the Bosphorus.
  • Day 4 — Bosphorus boat, Dolmabahçe or Ortaköy.
  • Day 5 — Kadıköy, Moda and the Asian side.

The fixed points every plan must respect

Topkapı Palace closes Tuesdays. Dolmabahçe and the Archaeological Museums close Mondays. The Grand Bazaar closes Sundays. Mosques close to visitors during the five daily prayers and for an extended period around Friday midday.

Place these first and build the flexible parts around them. A three-day trip arriving on a Sunday has a genuinely different optimal order from one arriving on a Wednesday.

Matching the plan to the days you have

Two days: the historic core only. Sultanahmet one day, Topkapı and the bazaars the next. Do not attempt the Bosphorus.

Four days: add Karaköy and Galata, and a Bosphorus stretch. This is the length at which Istanbul starts to feel like a city rather than a monument site.

Six days or more: add the Asian side, Balat and Fener, the Süleymaniye Mosque, and at least one day with nothing scheduled. Istanbul rewards an unplanned day more than most cities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need in Istanbul?

Three days covers the historic core properly. Five lets you see both shores. Under three, restrict yourself to Sultanahmet and accept that you are not seeing the city.

How many sites can I visit in one day?

Two major sites plus walking, a market and a meal. Three is tiring; five is a list rather than a visit.

What should I book in advance?

Timed entry for Topkapı Palace and Hagia Sophia in high season. Most other things can be decided on the day.

Should each day have a theme?

Group by district rather than theme. Crossing the city between themed sites costs 30 to 60 minutes each way.

What is the most common planning mistake?

Packing too much into day one. People arrive tired from a long flight and schedule the heaviest day first.
